Video Usage on Tablets, and a Few Other Data Points…

Posted on January 24, 2012 by Tim Saxe

http://techcrunch.com/2011/11/12/people-now-watch-videos-nearly-30-percent-longer-on-tablets-than-desktops/

The story above isn’t anything new…at almost 3 months old, it’s dinosaur-esq in the consumer market.  However, it does illustrate the use case of video’s on tablets, which by extension can be extrapolated to increase the need for technologies like VEE HD+ and DPO HD+.

There are also a lot of interesting statistics about viewing metrics on the various platforms and OS’s…as an owner and user of Windows and Apple computers, as well as Android and iOS devices, the study pretty much follows what I would believe, with the exception of the conversion rate statistic.  I would have expected iOS to lead the pack in all viewing stats, but in the case it isn’t.  Perhaps this is a factor of Android’s pure # of phones sold, which Google’s Andy Rubin pegged at 700K activations per day in Dec 2011.   Nevertheless, Android’s lead was surprising, given the video focus of iOS.

A few more video statistics:

  • Google gets 4B page views per day, as well as 1 hour of new footage each second: http://www.geekosystem.com/tag/youtube-statistics/.  To put that in perspective…in the time its taken you to read the blog to this point, there are now 2700 minutes of new content.
  • Speaking of YouTube, in a shameless bit of promotion, here’s a channel you should subscribe to: http://www.youtube.com/user/QuickLogicCorp
  • Older statistics on mobile phone usage: http://www.digitalbuzzblog.com/2011-mobile-statistics-stats-facts-marketing-infographic/.  Somewhere, Edward Tufte is smiling…
  • 5 very interesting mobile statistics for 2011

And in the most shameless bit of self-promotion you’ll ever see: while I mentioned that I have Windows and Apple computer as well as Android and iOS devices above, I don’t have a connected TV.   To anyone who may be interested in remedying this horrible, horrible situation, please email me.
